RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sometimes the ball bounces off the bar and in, but California Baptist University saw four shots bounce off the frame and away from danger in the fourth quarter alone Friday. The Lancers did not have enough to overcome their bad luck, however, resulting in a 12-11 overtime loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the fourth ranked team in NCAA Division III.
CBU falls to 2-4 on the season, while the Stags improve to 4-6.
It was the second game in a row CBU and CMS each found themselves needing overtime to establish a winner. The Lancers fought valiantly to send things to an extra frame after trailing by two goals, 7-5, late in the third quarter.
Consecutive goals within 21 seconds of another from Brent Teraoka, who tallied his fifth hat trick of the season, tied the game at 7-7 for CBU with 1:24 left in the third quarter. The Stags would not relinquish their lead entirely and were still up 10-9 with 3:34 to play in regulation.
Fifteen seconds later, David Ring scored his game-high fourth goal from up close to tie the game back up at 10-10. The Lancers had a shot at the game winner after Joseph Moorman, who had 13 blocks in the contest, came up with a huge block and secured possession with six seconds left.
CBU called timeout and drew up a play that led to a deep Clint Walling shot, while on frame the shot bounced off the bar and in front of a swarm of players. Two Lancers fought for the ball but could not come up with it before time expired.
True freshman Tanner Shore kept CBU in the game with a deep six-on-five goal – his second score of the game – that forced another tie, 11-11, with 2:24 remaining in the final overtime. CMS came away with the final goal with 53 seconds remaining and held on for the victory.
Now the Lancers head into Western Water Polo Association play, with a road trip to UC Davis serving as their first stop on Thursday at 7 p.m. CBU will stay in Davis for four games in the Aggie Shootout spread evenly between Friday and Saturday.
