RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saturday morning, California Baptist University split up to take on two races: the Sundodger Invitational and the Mustang Challenge, each finishing in fifth place as a team.
The Lancers put up a good fight to take fifth as a team at the 8K race hosted by University of Washington, which consisted of top-ranked teams in NCAA Division II. Fourteenth-ranked CBU, who also ranks fourth in the West Region, beat out Humboldt State and Western Oregon, who ranks 10th in the West Region.
"The men are so young they are still learning how to run the longer distances," head coach Ben Gall said of his athletes. "We realize where we need to be to get better, so this was a good experience for us."
After taking last week off, front runner Valentin Robert once again led the Lancers with a sixth-place finish and a time of 24 minutes, 25.62 seconds. Freshman William Ernst followed not far behind, crossing the finish line at 24:55.48.
For the second week in a row, Tyre Hines shaved time off his personal-best time, clocking in at 25:23.25 and Anthony Lozano finished strong just seconds later, 25:25.65.
CBU's other half of the squad competed in the Mustang Challenge hosted by the Masters College. The team ran a solid performance against top division I programs, finishing in fifth place as well. Jayden Emerson led the group with a time of 25:51.87.
The Lancers return home to host the CBU Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 3rd, looking to progress on this weekend's performance.
