Hawks Hold On

HAYWARD, Calif. — Each time California Baptist University found itself trailing, it dug deep and fought hard to find an equalizer. The Lancers got one, but couldn't find the second, dropping a tough 2-1 loss to Holy Names Thursday night.
CBU falls to 1-4-1 overall and opens PacWest action 0-1. The Hawks begin conference 1-0, sitting 2-4 overall.
Despite going down 1-0 early in the first half, the Lancers kept fighting and found the equalizer shortly after. Junior Guerra sent a ball into the box from the right flank of the field, finding Daniel Westholm wide open at the far post. The sophomore knocked the one-touch volley easily into the back of the net to even the game 1-1.
Both teams kept looking for the go-ahead and HNU looked like it might find it early but Julien Clery put his body in front of the shot to keep it tied at 1-1.
Gio Rodriguez ripped a shot at the top of the 18-yard box with just under 15 minutes to play, but it ricocheted off the crossbar. Westholm sent the rebound back on frame, but the Hawk goalkeeper came up with the save.
With less than three minutes left on the clock, HNU capitalized on a defensive miscue to go in front 2-1 and put pressure on the Lancers to find the back of the net once more.
In the last minutes of desperation, Daniel Moss fired off a shot, once again unfortunately finding the crossbar. Jeromy Gurule was there to send the rebound back on goal, but the Hawk goalkeeper managed to get his hand on it before time ran out with the 2-1 result going in favor of HNU.
CBU looks to shake off the unlucky loss as it takes on Dominican on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
