Tough Break in Overtime

IRVINE, Calif. — California Baptist University had its chances Saturday morning at Concordia University of Irvine, but just couldn't quite seem to find the back of the net.
The Lancers fell 1-0 in overtime to drop to 5-3 overall, 1-2 in the PacWest. The Eagles improve to 3-2-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference.
"This one really hurts," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "Unlike Tuesday, and except for the first part of the second half, we played really well. We controlled the game and created great chances, but unfortunately today was one of those nightmare days where you should score five or six and in the end, you get sucker punched on a counter attack completely against the run of play. We'll keep our heads up and go into the next one ready."
CBU finished with 18 shots on the day, putting seven on frame, compared to Concordia's 11.
Aidan Apodaca gave the Lancers a chance 17 minutes into the contest, forcing the Eagle goalkeeper to tip it wide for a corner kick. The Lancers got two corner kicks right after another, but couldn't break through CUI's defense.
Neither team could score to go into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Matthew Bernard hoped to be the hero in the 77th minute, tucking another shot on goal, but the CUI goalkeeper just got a glove on it to put the ball out for a corner kick. Baptiste Marec tried to redirect the corner into the net, but the Eagle was there once again to save the day.
Ninety minutes wasn't enough as the two teams prepared for overtime. Despite CBU pressing in Concordia's defensive third, the Eagles broke free on a counterattack and managed to score the golden goal to end the game 1-0 in favor of CUI.
CBU will look to regroup on the road as it heads to Hawaii for four games. The Lancers return home on Oct. 20 as they host Notre Dame de Namur for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
