Striking Gold In Hawaii
10/13/2016 5:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LAIE, Hawaii – In the final stretch of its Hawaiian trip, California Baptist University had to battle from behind, but dug deep and forced overtime. The Lancers didn't need waste any time in the extra period, however, scoring the golden goal just under a minute and a half in to win the game 2-1.
Â
The Lancers move to 7-4 overall, 3-3 in the PacWest with the result. The Seasiders stand 4-5-2 on the year, 3-4-1 in conference.
Â
CBU put the pressure on first as Daniel Westholm took the first shot of the game in the 16th minute, missing just wide. Minutes later, James Bogdanovich tried to redirect Sebastian Wiesboeck's corner kick on frame, but couldn't get it past the BYUH goalkeeper.
Â
Two minutes before halftime, however, the game turned as BYUH took a 1-0 lead off a cross into the near post.
Â
Hugo Gutierrez tried to even it up in the final 10 seconds of the period, but the Seasider goalkeeper managed to make the save to put the teams into halftime 1-0 in favor of BYUH.
Â
CBU was desperate for an equalizer but time kept winding down. With less than 10 minutes to go, Westholm saved the day. Gutierrez picked up the assist as Westholm buried his shot from close range to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
A minute and a half later, Aidan Apodaca looked like he might get the go-ahead, but it bounced off the post and out of harm's way. Bogdanovich tried to score on the rebound and put his shot on frame, but the Seasider goalkeeper got his hands on it.
Â
The last five minutes of regulation had both sides on the edge of their seats, but time expired before someone could find the back of the net to send the game into overtime.
Â
Not even two minutes into the extra period, the Lancers had won the game. Apodaca had a chance right out the gates, firing off a shot on goal in the first 30 seconds. The Seasider keeper pushed it wide for a corner kick and Gutierrez sent the dead ball into the box.
Â
BYUH tried to get a defensive clear off, but couldn't quite get it out of their 18-yard box to allow Apodaca to capitalize and rip his shot into the far post for the golden goal, 2-1.
Â
CBU has one last game in Hawaii, taking on Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. PST. The Lancers' first game back home is on Oct. 20 as they host Notre Dame de Namur at 12:30 p.m.
