KANEOHE, HAWAII — There was blood in the water as California Baptist University came out determined to walk away from its Hawaiian trip with another win. The Lancers grabbed a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i Pacific to fly back home with a 3-1 record over the four games in eight days.
Â
The Lancers improve to 8-4 on the year and 4-3 in the PacWest. The Sharks drop to 2-5-4 overall, 2-3-2 in conference.
"This was the most challenging opponent of our trip to Hawaii," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "In spite of their record, the Sharks are a very good team with a lot of quality attackers and I think they will recover and start winning. I thought Joey Scotti was huge today in his first college start dealing with their striker. And Hugo was big time once again. I don't think there is a better midfielder in our region, let alone our conference.
"In the end, it was a great team effort. We are excited to take three wins home from this very difficult trip and we can't wait to get back on our home field."
Less than five minutes into the contest, Sebastian Wiesboeck and Aidan Apodaca gave the Sharks two quick scares. Wiesboeck fired off a shot on goal and Apodaca tried to tuck away the rebound, but the HPU goalkeeper made the second save to keep it 0-0.
Â
The Sharks created some chances on the other end of the field, but the Lancer defense wasn't willing to budge.
Â
In the 25th minute, Hugo Gutierrez broke the scoreless streak with his first CBU career goal. James Bogdanovich drove in a long cross to the far post, allowing Gutierrez to collect the ball and put it away, 1-0.
Â
CBU held on for the remainder of the half, going into halftime with the one-goal cushion, but it wasn't enough.
Â
Six minutes into the second period, the Sharks equalized to put some pressure on the Lancers.
Â
Determined to avoid overtime, CBU kept pushing and got what it was looking for in the 81st minute.
Â
Gutierrez sent a high-arching cross into the 18-yard box and Apodaca timed his run perfectly to head it straight into the back of the net, giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead.
Â
Desperation kicked in for HPU, but the Lancers wouldn't allow another goal to walk away victorious, 2-1.
Â
CBU finally returns home after six games on the road, hosting Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. It kicks off a five-game home stand, before the Lancers conclude the regular season again on the road at Dixie State (Nov. 5) – which is undefeated in conference.
