LA JOLLA, Calif. – A meeting between California Baptist University and UC San Diego served as a showdown between the respective No. 15 and 16 teams in the NCAA, as both looked to improve their position in the Western Water Polo Association.
A second-half comeback was not enough to bring the Lancers back on the road, falling in a 10-7 loss to the Tritons. UCSD improves to 10-6, 4-0 in WWPA and CBU slips to 13-8, 0-2 before heading to Fresno Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m. in search of its first conference victory.
Joseph Moorman kept the Lancers in the game, with 15 saves and a steal. Dominick Nevarez scored a game-high two goals, while Brent Teraoka and Teddy Forte each chipped in a goal and assist. Kyle Johnson came away with a game-high four steals, as well.
UCSD scored first, just a minute into the game and then went up 2-0 2:27 into the contest. Logan Mena kept CBU in the game when he scored off a Tanner Shore pass with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
Forte scored next for the Lancers 33 seconds into the second quarter, with Royce Daniel Laverne assisting this time, to make it a two-goal deficit, 4-2. The Tritons scored the next three goals to take a sizable lead into halftime, 7-2.
CBU's greatest run came in the waning minutes of the third quarter. UC San Diego ran its lead as high as six, 8-2, with 2:21 to play in the frame, but the Lancers answered right back. Nevarez provided the response, as he scored off a Teraoka assist nine seconds later.
Luke Schuler gave CBU some momentum with a steal on the next possession and then fed Shore for the transition goal with an outlet pass, making it 8-4 in favor of the Tritons with two minutes left in the third.
Moorman kept his team in it and blocked three shots in the final two minutes of the third quarter. It kept it at 8-4 game going into the fourth, where CBU scored first, thanks to Elad Gunya, with 6:11 to play.
UC San Diego came up with a huge goal to restore its four-goal lead, 9-5, with 3:08 remaining in the game. Teraoka narrowed the deficit back down to three, 9-6, with a powerplay goal at the 1:19 mark, but it was too late for a complete comeback.
