SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Two more wins at the Santa Clara Rodeo, including an upset of a top-10 team, put the cap on a perfect weekend for California Baptist University on Saturday.
The 17th-ranked Lancers defeated No. 10 Bucknell 9-7 with a dominant fourth quarter and then sped past Navy 17-6. CBU improves to 17-8 heading into three games next week, while the Bison drop to 15-4 and Navy falls to 6-12. Two are crucial Western Water Polo Association contests next week against Santa Clara at home Friday at 6 p.m. and then road games Saturday at Loyola Marymount (12 p.m.) and Redlands (7 p.m.).
"There are some consistency things we can iron out, like always," Coach Kevin Rosa said, "but we had some really good stretches of water polo this weekend. Hopefully we build upon that and take it into two big conference games next weekend."
Brent Teraoka, Jonathan Lotero and Teddy Forte scored five goals each on the day. Lotero added eight drawn ejections and two steals, while Teraoka had three ejections two assists and two steals and Forte had an assist and three steals. Joseph Moorman logged 23 saves and five steals in both games.
"It was nice to get Jonny [Lotero] going, he had some big goals today," Coach Kevin Rosa said. "He had a breakout game and got some confidence going today."
In Saturday's opener, CBU actually fell into a 3-0 hole against Bucknell. The Lancers managed to fight back and went into the fourth quarter tied at 5-5.
Teraoka and Lotero both scored less than a minute into the fourth to give CBU a 7-5 edge. Elad Gunya made it an 8-5 lead with 6:31 to play to give the Lancers a big advantage. The Bison fought back within a goal with 4:30 remaining, but Lotero scored the final goal of the game with 2:20 to go to secure the victory.
"We didn't get off to the start we wanted to down 3-0 but we were able to recover really quickly and rally," Rosa said. "We probably played our best stretch of water polo in that fourth quarter and scored three goals in two-and-a-half minutes. We outscored them 9-4 after the first three minutes of the game."
Lotero scored three times, drew three ejections and forced a turnover against the Bison, while Tanner Shore notched four assists in the game. Forte and Teraoka each scored twice, and Moorman posted 14 saves and two steals.
Ten different Lancers scored on Navy. Teraoka and Gunya tallied hat tricks, while Forte, Lotero and Dominick Nevared added two goals apiece.
CBU took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter and then built up a four-goal lead, 7-3, at halftime. The Lancers just got better and won quarter three, 6-1.
"We started a little slow but were able to pick it up," Rosa said of the Navy game. "By the end, we got a little people playing time. Everyone got a little piece of the pie, a lot of guys scored there."
