RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University couldn't quite click on offense and dropped a 4-1 loss to Fresno Pacific Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers fall to 10-5 overall, 6-4 in the PacWest. The defending conference champion Sunbirds improve to 6-6-3, 5-3-2 in conference.
"Unfortunately, we gave away some poor goals today and in spite of creating a lot of fantastic chances, we really struggled with our finishing," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "Disappointing as it is, it's important that we don't dwell on the result for too long. We need to make sure we get the next one and go from there."
CBU created chances early on, but soon found itself down in a 2-0 hole, 18 minutes into the game.
Five minutes later, Aidan Apodaca drew a foul in the 18-yard box to award the Lancers a penalty kick. Luca Tschaidse converted the PK with ease, but the referee called it back due to some crossing the line too soon. Unfazed, Tschaidse placed the second attempt into the back of the net to cut the Sunbirds' lead in half, 2-1.
FPU took back its two-goal lead, however, in the 27th minute to hold a 3-1 cushion heading into halftime.
The Lancers came out looking to get back into it as Apodaca drew another penalty kick in the 60th minute. FPU's goalkeeper came up with the save, however, to keep CBU from building momentum.
Unfortunately, FPU capitalized again in the 68th minute and held on for the 4-1 victory.
CBU will look to bounce back in two days as it hosts Holy Names on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Five seniors will be honored before kickoff in Logan Deeney, Wyatt Deane, Matthew Bernard, James Bogdanovich and Julien Clery.
