RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University shook off Thursday's loss in a monstrous way, beating Holy Names 6-0 Saturday morning.
The Lancers improve to 11-5 overall, 7-4 in the PacWest with the onslaught. The Hawks drop to 1-13-2, 1-9-1 in conference.
"After a poor showing Thursday, we were happy to get back on the field only two days later," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "It was important to respond. We know it's a big jumble on the NCAA Tournament bubble and all we can do is take care of our business – we did that today. It's always nice when you honor your seniors with such a dominating performance. Those guys are all a credit to CBU and can be proud to play such a key role in turning around our program and getting it back to where it should be."
Aidan Apodaca got CBU on the board early, finishing a cross from Daniel Westholm in the 12th minute of action for his ninth goal of the year.
Despite 11 more shots in the half, the Lancers would only go into halftime with the 1-0 lead. Things exploded in the second half, however, as five different Lancers found the back of the net.
Less than four minutes into the second frame, CBU struck again. Sebastian Wiesboeck sent a cross into the box, allowing James Bogdanovich to flick the ball on and Baptiste Marec tucked it away to put the Lancers in front 2-0.
Sixty seconds later, it was 3-0 in favor of the Lancers, this time with Westholm assisting on a Luca Tschaidse goal.
CBU didn't take its foot off the pedal from there and capitalized again in the 63rd minute. Hugo Gutierrez switched the ball from the left over to the right, finding Bogdanovich open just outside the 18-yard box. The senior defender sent his cross into the box and Caley Powers headed it home, 4-0.
Bogdanovich assisted his third goal of the game in the 69th minute as he sent a byline cross back to the penalty kick spot. Wiesboeck timed his run perfectly and one-touched the ball into the goal to extend CBU's lead to 5-0.
The final goal of the game came in the 81st minute, with two seniors teaming up on Senior Day. Wyatt Deane beat a defender to get a cross off on the right side of the field, finding Matthew Bernard for his third goal of the season.
Noah Oyler and Logan Deeney each had to make two saves to secure the 6-0 shutout for CBU.
The Lancers conclude their home schedule on Thursday, hosting Academy of Art at 12:30 p.m. CBU then finishes the regular season on the road at Dixie State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
