Goals Rain Down in Hilo

HILO, Hawaii – California Baptist University set the tone of its Hawaii swing with a 3-0 blasting over Hawaii Hilo Saturday night, despite rain clouds looming in the sky.
The Lancers improve to 6-3 on the year, 2-2 in the PacWest. The Vulcans drop to 1-8-1, 0-5-1 in conference.
"We knew coming in that this is a difficult place to play, so we are obviously happy with the result," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "I'm particularly happy with our effort defensively. We need to get more clean sheets and to not allow any second half shots is a testament to the effort of the whole team. With four games in eight days, it was important to use the whole squad if possible. We had some good contributions off the bench with goals from Kyle and Matt and some good solid work from the others."
It was only a matter of time before the Lancers found the back of the net since it was almost all CBU on the attack in the first half. The first goal came in the 23rd minute of play as Aidan Apodaca and Junior Guerra set up Luca Tschaidse for the score as he tucked it away at the top of the six-yard box.
UHH didn't get a shot off until the 30th minute, but Noah Oyler made the save to keep his team in front. He had to make two more saves in the next three minutes, putting CBU into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
CBU came out strong to start the second half, firing off three shots in the first four minutes of the period. Tschaidse looked for goal number two of the game, but couldn't get it past the UHH goalkeeper. Matthew Bernard tried to take advantage of the rebound, but his shot was blocked before the Vulcans could get the ball out of danger.
Ten minutes later, the Lancers thought they broke through again. Bernard redirected a cross toward the goal with his head. It hit the post and bounced straight down, erupting the CBU fans in cheers thinking it had crossed the line. The officials didn't signal for the goal, however, to keep the score at 1-0.
Kyle Pizano gave the Lancers the insurance they were looking for in the 72nd minute. The junior collected a misclear from the Vulcan defense and rocketed off a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, finding nothing but net.
Despite the 2-0 lead, CBU didn't take its foot off the pedal, hungry for more. Bernard sealed the deal in the 86th minute after he drew a hard foul in the box. He gave the goalkeeper no chance on the penalty kick conversion, making it 3-0 in favor of CBU.
The Lancers hop on a plane to Oahu to continue their eight-day Hawaiian getaway, playing Chaminade on Monday at 4 p.m. PST. CBU has two more games after the one with Silverswords before it returns home on Oct. 20 to host Notre Dame de Namur at 12:30 p.m.
