Back At It Again

SAINT LEO, Fla. — California Baptist University returned to the NCAA Division II Championship with gusto Saturday morning, grabbing its highest placing yet.
The No. 17-ranked Lancers took 15th overall at The Abbey Course in Saint Leo, Florida, with 377 team points, becoming one of the first PacWest teams to crack the top-20. In the previous two times CBU had competed at the championship, its highest finish was 22nd (2013).
Valentin Robert led the Lancers in the 10K with an All-American finish, taking 24th overall out of 242 runners with a time of 31 minutes, 00.7 seconds. The top-25 performance is the highest a Lancer has finished at the championship meet. The last time Robert competed at the D-II Championship, he took 129th.
Jayden Emerson followed with a time of 32:06.3 for 86th overall and Michael Lowrie clocked in at 32:19.2.
Dennis Messmer and William Ernst were neck-and-neck sprinting to the finish line, with Messmer just beating out his fellow sophomore. Messmer's time of 32:36.6 was just .3 seconds faster than Ernst's 32:36.9.
Ken Kipkorir finished in 32:49.9, while Duncan Perillat clocked in at 33:55.9 to round out the runners for the Lancers.
CBU returns home and takes time off before starting up the track season in 2017.
