SEATTLE — In the first conference title race of the NCAA Division I Era, California Baptist University finished fifth in the Western Athletic Conference Championship meet at the Jefferson Park Golf Course on Saturday.
CBU took fifth place with 106 team points, while Utah Valley claimed the team title with 30 points. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (72 points), Seattle U (88) and defending WAC champion Kansas City (94 points) took second through fourth place, respectively.
As he has the entire season, Simon Bedard led the Lancers with a time of 25 minutes flat, just missing out on All-WAC honors by one spot after taking 15th. Jayden Emerson was right on his tail to wrap up his CBU cross country career, setting a personal best with a time of 25:2.8 to take 16th.
McMarshall Hartzenburg (25:09.1) and Dennis Messmer (25:09.7) both landed in the top-25 at 23rd and 25th place, respectively, while William Ernst (25:13.3) rounded out the CBU scoring five with a 27th place finish. Hector Peralta (25:30.0, 35th) and Cody Beeson (25:44.3, 44th) wrapped up the Lancers' debut at the WAC Championships, with Beeson setting a new personal best to end his freshman season.
The Lancers will look to build on their inaugural Division I season next year after a successful season with four top-five team finishes, including a win at the UCR Highlander Invitational.
