RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 10-ranked California Baptist University came out Monday evening determined to have a happy holiday. The Lancers erupted to an 84-63 victory over Cal State San Marcos, heading into the week-long break with some extra Christmas cheer.
The Lancers improve to 10-1 overall, while the Cougars drop to 7-4.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Lancers, led by Jordan Heading (6-for-12) and Kalidou Diouf (8-for-15), who each chipped in 18 points. Heading added three steals defensively, while Diouf snatched up 10 rebounds to help CBU out-rebound CSUSM 45-to-33.
Casey Norris had a career night with 16 points (6-for-7) and four assists. Michael Smith scored 13 points and assisted three times, while Jason Todd contributed 12 points and eight boards.
Todd got the game off to an explosive start, knocking down a shot from the perimeter to open the Lancers on a 16-4 run. Norris, Smith and Heading each got in on the action with Todd to fuel the spurt.
It put the Cougars on their heels for the rest of the half, as CBU walked into the break with a 44-23 cushion.
Norris gave the Lancers another quick start in the second, scoring a layup in the first 16 seconds of the period to further distance his team from CSUSM.
The Cougars found their footing momentarily and clawed their way back to a 14-point deficit, 52-38, with just about 13 and a half minutes left in the game.
Diouf sparked another 10-0 run to give CBU a 24-point cushion halfway through the second. Again, CSUSM tried to maintain the Lancers, but couldn't keep them under control as CBU coasted to the 84-63 victory.
The Lancers take a break to enjoy Christmas before returning to action on December 29th for a 7:00 p.m. home tilt against Life Pacific.
