LAS VEGAS – About two weeks ago, California Baptist University found success in Las Vegas and it was back for more at the Desert Duals on Monday.
Despite having to forfeit a weight class and being without one of its reigning NCAA Division II All-Americans, the 10th-ranked Lancers were competitive with a 27-16 win over Coe College and losses to 20th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit, 22-17, and Minnesota-State Moorhead, 27-23.
Nick Fiegener and Jacob Waste both went 3-0 on the day and remained undefeated against non-Division I competition, as CBU dropped to 2-4 in duals this season. Wheeling Jesuit remained undefeated at 4-0 and MSM improved to 2-2, while Coe sits at 3-2 on the year.
Fiegener improved to 14-2 on the year on Monday. The sophomore 184-pounder won twice by technical fall and pinned his final opponent to give him 13 bonus-point victories this year. At 197, Jacob Waste went 3-0, with a tech, pin and decision in the tournament to bump his record up to 10-3.
Peter Cunningham (141), Daxton Gordon (149), Dominic Kincaid (165) and Paul Head (heavyweight) each went 2-1 on the day for the Lancers, who head into Christmas break and pick the year back up against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe and No. 23 Colorado Mesa on Jan. 5th in Grand Junction, Colo.
CBU notched its first win of the day with a strong start and finish versus Coe College. After forfeiting the 125-pound match, Trent Smith, Cunningham and Gordon rattled off three-straight wins to give the Lancers an 11-6 lead. Smith and Gordon won by major decisions of 13-0 and 13-4, respectively, while Gordon finished up 7-2.
Coe went on a 3-0 run of its own after that to go back up 16-11 with two matches to go. Back-to-back 17-2 techs from Fiegener and Waste ensured the comfortable win, as Coe forfeited the heavyweight bout.
After trailing by as much as 19-3 in its first dual of the day, CBU launched a furious comeback attempt by winning four-straight matches. It all started with Kincaid's 5-0 shutout at 165 and continued with the closest bout of the dual, as Kleint overcame his opponent, 3-1, at 174.
Fiegener put up five big points for the Lancers with a dominant 17-1 technical fall victory and Waste kept them in it with an 8-1 win. Wheeling Jesuit held on for the 22-17 win with a close decision at heavyweight.
It was a similar story in CBU's finale on Monday, as Minnesota-State Moorhead jumped out to an 18-0 advantage. Gordon broke the run with an 8-4 win at 149 and a technical fall from Kincaid made it 24-8. The Lancers closed out the day on a 3-0 run, with Fiegener and Waste pinning their opponents and Paul Head claiming an 8-2 win at heavyweight.
