LAS VEGAS – For the second time in three days, Robert Griffith showed he and the rest of California Baptist University stack up well against NCAA Division I competition by winning another individual race to help his team secure a top-two finish at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Invite on Saturday.
Griffith won his second event in three days at the invite when he clocked in at 15 minutes, 26.47 seconds in the 1650-yard freestyle, closing him in on the Division II Championship automatic qualifying time of 15:20.74 in the event.
The win was good for 20 points and helped CBU create separation from its competition, as it finished behind University of the Pacific (1082) in second with 818 points. The 13th-ranked Lancers in Division II defeated D-I host UNLV (741) and Fresno Pacific (677) in the process.
Despite Griffith's win, CBU's most dominant event was the 200 butterfly on Saturday. It produced half of the top-eight finishers, with Chris Sands going runner-up in a D-II consideration time of 1:50.62, Justin Quiroga taking fourth (1:52.25) and Quinn Birtles (1:55.70) and Adrian Gutierrez (1:55.93) in seventh and eighth, respectively.
There was another runner-up swim in there for the Lancers when true freshman Scott Tolman notched a B cut of 1:59.44 in the 200 breast. Adrian Deloffre finished third (2:03.21) and Reese Gonzales tallied a top-eight mark (2:12.64).
Tolman's day was not done, as he finished fourth in the 100 individual medley (51.40). Five other Lancers finished in the top-16, with Quiroga in eighth (52.85), Ashton Lowery 11th (54.15), Birtles 12th (54.96), Brandon Doyle 14th (55.61) and Gonzales 16th (58.11).
CBU produced a top-four placing in the final race of the weekend, the 400-free relay, thanks to Deloffre, Bernardo Valentim, Christian Britton and Alexis Ohmar clocking in 3:03.40.
Josh Fluetsch also took fourth for the Lancers in the 1650 free (16:10.52), while Corey Stein swam to 11th (17:43.69) in the event. Three other top-11 swims came from Ohmar, Valentim and Robert Jordan. Ohmar (45.74) and Valentim (45.87) took 10th and 11th in the 100 free, respectively, while Jordan was 10th in the 20 back (1:58.05).
