RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Despite Concordia University of Irvine's record, No. 4 California Baptist University knew it couldn't take its final regular-season home opponent for granted. The Lancers got off to a little shaky start, but quickly found their rhythm to grab an 84-49 victory over the Eagles.
CBU improves to 23-1 overall, 15-1 in the PacWest to sit tied for first place with Academy of Art. The win also extends the Lancers' winning streak to 16-straight victories, now sitting as the second-longest win streak in program history, and closes the regular-home season schedule with a perfect 14-0 mark. CUI drops to 2-21 on the year, 1-17 in conference, with the loss.
Cassidy Mihalko (6-for-12) and Kamille Diaz (5-for-10) each led the Lancers with 15 points. Mihalko chipped in seven assists and seven rebounds. Courtney Nelson added 11 points.
"It was nice to see everyone score and contribute," said head coach Jarrod Olson. "It was good to finish the season unbeaten at home, and we are looking forward to some tough games coming up, starting with Point Loma on Friday."
CUI opened with the first points of the night and hung with the Lancers for most of the first quarter. After the Eagles tied it up at 19-19, CBU closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run to hold a 28-21 lead after the first 10 minutes. Diaz sank a three to keep CUI from jumping in front, 22-19, and two free throws from Nelson capped the run.
Halfway into the second quarter, CBU started making its move and took its first double-digit lead of the night. After CUI cut the margin to five points to start the quarter, Nelson finished two free throws to start a 10-2 run to put CBU up 38-25.
The Eagles tried to chip the margin down into single-digit territory, but CBU held CUI off to hold a 42-31 edge at halftime.
Coming out of the break, CUI tried to double team Mihalko, but she found Megan Frerer wide open under the basket to extend CBU's lead to 44-31. The Eagles responded with a basket of their own, but the Lancers went off on a 9-0 spurt to take their first 20-point edge, 53-33.
CBU further distanced itself to start the final 10 minutes, scoring seven unanswered points before the Eagles knew what hit them. Diaz started the run by draining a deep three and found Olivia Weber under the basket to threaten a 30-point upper hand, 69-41.
Kristine Sellona put the Lancers over the 30-point edge with a shot from the perimeter to give her team a 74-43 lead heading down the stretch.
Once again, CUI tried to slice the margin under 30 points, but an and-one opportunity for Emma Meriggioli gave CBU an 81-47 lead. Brittany Sepeda sealed the 84-49 victory by knocking down a deep three with less than a minute on the clock.
The Lancers close out the remaining regular season on the road, first heading south to Point Loma on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. tip off. CBU concludes the regular season in the Bay Area, Feb. 23-27.
