RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After staying right with BYU the day before, California Baptist University came out on fire in Saturday's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rematch in the Van Dyne Gym and scored five of the first six points.
Unfortunately, the Cougars showed exactly why they are ranked second in all of NCAA Division I-II with a comeback in that first set. It paved the way for a BYU sweep, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19, Saturday night. Brigham Young University improves to 12-2, 8-2 in the MPSF this season, while the 15th-ranked Lancers drop to 8-9, 3-9 as their six-match home stand comes to a close.
Four players had at least five kills for CBU, as redshirt-freshman setter Arturo Iglesias spread the ball around well. Middle blockers Jackson Burge and Enrique de Diego Garcia each tied for a team-high six kills. Burge also had three blocks, while Garcia had one and an ace.
Outside hitters Rocky DeLyon and Roy Powell each finished with five kills, while DeLyon added a match-high four aces, along with three digs.
CBU started things out with a Powell ace in set one, and kills from Iglesias and Garcia made it 5-1 Lancers. A stunned BYU squad called timeout, but the home team stayed in control after consecutive Cougar errors made it 7-3.
Consecutive DeLyon aces increased CBU's advantage to five, 13-8, but BYU turned momentum in its favor with a 7-1 charge, giving it a 15-14 edge, with four blocks spearheading it.
A DeLyon kill and Cougar error put CBU back in front, 16-15, and another BYU service error tied things again at 17-17. BYU rattled off the next three points and never looked back en route to the win.
In set two, a 6-2 run from the Cougars opened things up and paved the way to the win.
A 9-4 run early in set three gave BYU a 15-9 lead that was enough cushion to outlast another Lancer rally.
CBU takes to the road for the next two matches, visiting third-ranked UCLA on Wednesday and No. 10 UC Santa Barbara Friday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. The Lancers return to Van Dyne on March 3rd for a home match with USC.
