Looking for a Saintly Sweep

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After offense set the tone for California Baptist University in its series opener with Saint Martin's, it has put the Lancers on the verge of a series sweep of the Saints after a nine-and-nine inning doubleheader Friday at Totman Stadium.
CBU came away with both games on scores of 6-1 and 12-6, thanks to a total of 28 hits. The Lancers hit .389 and slugged .569 as a team on the day, as they improve to 9-4 and dropped the Saints to 3-6 this season. Saturday's series finale is set for a 12 p.m. start at Totman.
Six CBU players logged three hits or more Friday. Mark Sanchez led the way with a 6-for-8 performance that included three runs, a double and run batted in. He went 3-4 in each contest. Stephen Lohr was 4-for-7 with three runs, three RBIs and a triple, while Andrew Montoya batted 4-for-10 with three runs and a double.
Brian Ruhm brought in five runs with two more scored on a 3-for-7 day that included a grand-slam home run. Antonio Chavarria (three hits) also homered, drove in two and scored twice. Bryce Macy was 3-for-5 with two RBIs of his own.
The Lancers blasted their way to victory with three home runs, including Ruhm's grand slam, in the doubleheader finale. CBU raced out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Saint Martin's fought to make it a game, with three runs in the seventh.
Lohr led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. An error and bunt single from Sanchez loaded the bases without an out. Macy, a pinch hitter, sent a single through the right side for a run, while keeping the bases loaded.
Ruhm then promptly put the game out of a reach, taking a first-pitch ball and then smoking one over the right-field fence for his grand-slam. The 11-3 cushion was plenty of insurance for the Lancers, who added one more run on a Sanchez sacrifice fly in the eighth. Chavarria and Ryan Williams also homered in the game for CBU.
Jeremy McDonald earned the victory on the mound with seven strong innings for the Lancers. He allowed just one earned run, three hits and three walks, while striking out 13 -- a career-high for himself and season-high for CBU.
In the opener, Sanchez (3-4), Lohr (2-4), Ruhm (2-4), Macy (2-4) and Montoya (2-5) all had multiple hits.
Dylan Stowell continued to impress on the mound, with another quality start. He allowed one run, one walk and three hits over seven innings to improve to 3-0 in four starts.
A mini, two-out rally got CBU on the board in the fourth of the first game as Sanchez doubled into center field and Ruhm singled into left to score him. Two hits and an error opened the door for three more Lancer runs in the fifth.
Alec Morabito led things off on a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a passed ball, before a Zack Norris bunt scored him. Norris stole second and then scored on an error before a Lohr single plated another run to make it 4-1 CBU.
In the seventh, a leadoff Montoya double put the Lancers back on the attack. Lohr plated him with a one-out single and then Macy scored Lohr with a two-out single that concluded the scoring.
CBU's Vini Haro logged the save in the first game with two innings of relief where he did not allow a walk or hit and struck out three.
