RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the sixth year in a row, California Baptist University opened the season against Cal State Los Angeles. It was the Golden Eagles who came away with the win on Opening Night, however, posting an 8-2 victory at Totman Stadium.
Both teams will face each other two more times this series, with Cal State L.A. hosting Friday at 6 p.m. and the Lancers putting on the finale Saturday at noon. Brian Ruhm and Stephen Lohr both start out the season batting .500 after going 2-for-4 in the game.
Ruhm and Lohr both doubled in the contest, with Ruhm's bringing in one of the Lancers' two runs on the night.
Antonio Chavarria, the reigning PacWest Player of the Year, picked up where he left off and got CBU on the board in the top of the fourth. The senior led off the inning with an absolute no-doubter over the right-field fence. It made it a 5-1 deficit after the Golden Eagles poured on four runs in the top of the frame on four hits and an error.
Back-to-back doubles from Andrew Montoya and Ruhm provided the Lancers' other tally. Montoya doubled into center field with one out and then came around to score when Ruhm laced one down the right-field line.
Cal State L.A.'s bullpen was able to settle down and finish off a strong start from Ralph Ramirez, who pitched the first five innings for the Eagles.
CBU received a solid one-two-three inning of relief pitching from Patrick Gonzales in the top of the ninth. The senior right-hander struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Zack Norris and Taylor Wetzel also opened the season with base hits for CBU. Norris doubled with one out in the bottom of the third but was stranded in what was then a 1-0 game for CSULA.
Lohr led off the ninth inning with a double, but there wasn't a rally in the cards for the Lancers.
