INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – If there has to be goodbye, at least it was a sweet one for California Baptist University and Josh Hanson. The senior concluded his collegiate career with a medal finish at the NCAA Division II Championships at Indiana University's Natatorium Saturday.
It was part of the Lancers' rally to hold onto their top-12 finish in Division II. They put up a total of 150 points over the week to seal the impressive ending to the year. CBU had six All-American performances on Saturday, as well.
"The men really rallied," Coach Rick Rowland said. "It was a really fast meet and a really fast pool, a lot of records fell. It just gets faster every year. We had a pretty good day, though, we picked up some big points."
Hanson completed an impressive final meet by taking third in the 200-yard backstroke in one minute, 44.37 seconds and swimming on the All-American 400-free relay team. Those were two of six All-American awards given to the Lancers on Saturday. Hanson was a six-time All-American this season alone and had a program-high 16 in the NCAA over his career.
"Hanson was a yard and touch away from the title in the back, he had a great comeback in that one," Rowland said. "Hanson had more podium visits of anyone at the meet and any Lancer ever in the NCAAs."
Robert Griffith and Zach Parry gave CBU two more top-10 finishes on the day. Griffith finished sixth in the 1650 free, with a time of 15:26.93, and Parry became a two-time All-American this season by taking seventh on the 3-meter dive with an astounding 530.60 points.
To close out the meet, the Lancers' 400-free relay team finished 14th in 3:01.04 for All-American honors. Hanson, Bernardo Gonzalez Valentim, Brent Teraoka and Alexis Ohmar made up the relay team. Ohmar also took 28th in the 100 free (45.12).
CBU showed its depth on both the boards and distance events, with multiple All-Americans on the 3-meter board and 1650 free. Elijah Barrows and Kendall Rummell each earned national prestige by taking 15th in the 1650 free (15:41.95) and 3-meter board (433.05 points), respectively.
"This was a great year, winning our first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title," Rowland said. "It's tough saying goodbye to seniors like Hanson, Barrows and Rummell. You can't ask for anything more from them, with their work ethics and how they compete in and out of the pool.
"Rummell did a great job qualifying for both boards on Tuesday, and then he goes out and is an All-American in both. He really had a great week."
