CORONA, Calif. – Looking to make a statement, California Baptist University hit the ground running and ended the first day of the CBU Invitational at the Eagle Glen Golf Club in first place.
CBU shot a 290 in the first round and a 288 in the second, which proved to be the lowest score in the field, to finish day one with a 578 and just 18 more holes to play at the Lancers home course. The tournament hosts six NCAA Division II ranked teams, including No. 11 Simon Fraser and No. 14 CSU San Marcos.
Nevertheless, the Lancers hold a five-stroke lead over Colorado Christian's 583 (285-298), which ended the first round in first place with a five-shot lead. BYU-Hawaii is eight strokes off CBU in third (586), while Western New Mexico and Cal State San Marcos are tied for fourth with 594s.
CBU as a team also leads the statistical leaderboard, scoring the most pars (113) and averaging a 4.85 score on all par-five holes. The Lancers also scored the lowest average on par-three holes (3.23).
The final round of the CBU Invitational takes place Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, as the Lancers will look to retain their lead.
Tai Kuida is spearheading the impressive performance for CBU. He carded an incredible five-under-par 67 in the first round and shot 73 in the second to give him a tournament-best 140. Kuida collected nine birdies and 22 pars over the course of 36 holes played. He was four-under for all par-five holes and even for all par three and par-four holes. The Redondo Beach native currently sits in first place on the 95-player leaderboard.
"The guys played very solid today on their home course," Coach John Hackney said. "Tai was coming off his best tournament and continued his good play. He struck the ball well and made clutch shots."
Coming in behind Kuida is Kavan Eubank, who took third after the first day with a 142. In the first round, Eubank shot even par (72) before going two-under-par 70 in the second round. Eubank earned nine birdies and 18 pars, also grabbing one of the seven eagles recorded on the day.
"Kavan also had an outstanding day," Hackney said. "His second round concluded with an eagle on number 18 when he sank about a 12-foot putt."
Christian Sanders, who sits tied for 19th place, scored 25 pars out of 36 holes to give him an overall 149 (76-73). Greg Gonzalez and Chris Carew ended the first day shooting scores of 153 (81-72) and 154 (75-79). Carew leads the tournament in pars, scoring 27 in 36 chances.
Glenn Hakes competed as an individual for CBU and carded a 154 (74-80) over two rounds.
"This is a great bunch of guys and we can't wait to see what they do tomorrow," Hackney said.
