LOS ANGELES — California Baptist University's men's and women's track teams kicked off the 2016 season in record fashion. The Lancers saw two program records set, despite getting thrown off a little at the Cal State L.A. Invitational Saturday.
CBU didn't getting the memo that the faster 3,000-meter heat was going to start 20 minutes early, but the Lancers didn't let that slow them down in the second heat. Veronica Hall broke the program record, just beating out Caroline Barkechir's previous record by half of a second. Hall crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 6.12 seconds to win her heat, which would have also put her first in the faster heat.
The Lancers went on to grab the next seven spots, along with another CBU runner finishing in the top 10.
"I'm proud of the girls in how they stayed focused and still competed well in what amounted to be a team-time trial," said Coach Ben Gall.
Emeline Delanis made her collegiate debut on the track with a second-best time, clocking in at 10:18.66. She had teammate Pauline Boelle right on her tail, however, as the junior finished the 3K in 10:19.79.
Sophomores Katie Demling and Claire Rainey took fourth and fifth with 10:23.24 and 10:23.42 respective times, while Barkechir placed sixth in the heat with a time of 10:27.29. Rounding out the final three Lancer top-10 finishes were Charlie Davidson (10:33.17), Alicia Williams (10:36.09) and Tori Dutchover (10:40.66).
On the men's side, CBU was able to run in its correct 3K heat and saw another program record broken. Abdel El-Hajjami looked strong after a solid cross country season and took third overall in the heat with a personal-best and CBU-best time of 8:26.91. He and his fellow Frenchman Valentin Robert stayed at the front of the pack for the entire race to both finish in the top four. Robert's time of 8:28.50 was good for the fourth spot in the heat, as well as a personal record for the junior.
Not far off his fellow Lancers, Anthony Lozano put in a hard-fought race to take seventh in the heat. He followed in his teammates' shoes and also started the season with a personal record, clocking in at 8:36.72.
Gall ran all of his Lancers in the 3,000-meter races this week, hoping to dust off the cobwebs from the three-month hiatus after the cross country season ended. If Saturday's results were any indication of how the season will go for CBU, Gall shouldn't be too concerned.
The Lancers will look to carry momentum from this first race over into next weekend at the Occidental Distance Carnival in Eagle Rock, Calif. At the meet, CBU's runners will take off in different events, while still hoping to find success in each of them.
