LA JOLLA, Calif. — In their first time running the 3,000-meter steeplechase event, four California Baptist University runners made quite the impression at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego Saturday evening.
"This was a complete experimental weekend to see if we can try and pursue the steeple [for these four] to try and get them all to nationals this year or next," said head coach Ben Gall. "Usually people drop 20-30 seconds from their first few steeple races, so we are very excited about how all four of them ran tonight."
Three women ran the event in under 11 minutes and 20 seconds to now sit as the third-, fourth- and sixth-fastest times in the all-time record book for CBU. Emeline Delanis led the charge with a seventh-place finish, clocking in at 11:07.26, less than three seconds off an NCAA Division II provisional mark (11:05.00).
Claire Rainey and Charlie Davidson weren't far off their fellow Lancer, finishing in 11:13.28 and 11:17.14, respectively. All three CBU women will join Katie Deimling, who holds the school record in the event, at the PacWest Conference Championship meet next week, hoping to shave time off their first experiences.
On the men's side, Dennis Messmer was also mere seconds off a provisional mark in his first time running the steeple. The freshman took fifth at the invitational with a time of 9:25.42. His time is the fourth-best time in the PacWest this year, sitting behind three Lancers: Valentin Robert (record holder), Abdel El-Hajjami and Duncan Perillat.
These four athletes, along with several other Lancers, will get another shot at bettering their times before the NCAA Division II field is set as they head to Azusa Pacific, host of the conference championship April 28-29.
