RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Fresh off repeating as PacWest champions, California Baptist University turns its attention to the NCAA Division II Super West Regional tournament, as it looks to continue its dominance after winning the conference title by 40 strokes.
CBU has now successfully qualified for the NCAA postseason in all three seasons since it became a fully-fledged member in 2013-14. All 12 Super West Region teams will tee off for the event May 2nd, with the three-round tournament ending May 4th, at the Brookside Golf and Country Club in Stockton. University of the Pacific and Visit Stockton are serving as tournament hosts this year.
This season, the 16th-ranked Lancers are looking to advance to the Division II Championships for the first time in their history. The top-three teams and top-three individuals not with a qualified team out of the region will advance to the national tournament. The Division II Championships will be held May 18-21 at Common Ground Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
CBU was very close to qualifying for nationals last season, tying for fourth place in the region. The Lancers enter as the fourth-ranked team in the Super West Region this year. Tarleton State, Dallas Baptist and St. Mary's (Texas) are the top-three teams in the region in that order, followed by Sonoma State, Academy of Art, Point Loma, Western Washington, West Texas A&M, Chico State, St. Edward's and Oklahoma Christian.
CBU's second-straight PacWest title charge was led by freshman Erica Wang's stellar performance, as she won the individual conference championship on a one-hole playoff and with a three-round total of 224 (78-73-73). All five Lancers earned PacWest All-Tournament honors, though, and CBU will look to keep its balance going into next week.
Wang's 75.42 18-hole scoring average is second only to Marvi Monsalve's 74.68 for CBU. Natalie Park (77.89), Laura Scrivner (78.32) and Tayler Hoag (78.47) all average under 80 for the Lancers. Scrivner is also a reigning WGCA All-Region selection after she placed a team-best fifth (225, 77-70-75) at regionals last year.
