Concordia Snowballed by Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It may not have been the way California Baptist University's coaching staff drew it up, but the Lancers got the PacWest-series opening win over long and two-time conference rival Concordia University of Irvine Thursday night.
After being held in check for most of the contest, the seventh-ranked Lancers' offense awoke in the bottom of the eighth inning and plated four runs. The Eagles would load the bases in the top of the ninth, but did not put a runner across to suffer a 4-2 loss at the hands of CBU at Totman Stadium.
"It takes just one of us to get us going, and once we settle in we're dangerous," A.J. David said. "Things get rolling once we get that one guy to get us started."
It was the first time in almost exactly four years Concordia and CBU have faced each other. The Eagles began their transition to the NCAA and joined the PacWest this season after being long-time rivals with the Lancers in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
With rain in the forecast, the rest of the series has been shuffled. Friday is now a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The matchup concludes Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Totman.
It started out as a battle of the aces Thursday, with the first several innings flying by, while CBU's Tyson Miller and Concordia's Isaiah Terrazas mowed down batters. The Eagles took control of the game when they scored twice in the top of the fourth.
Terrazas limited a powerful Lancer lineup to just five hits through seven innings, and was close to cruising until Brian Ruhm grinded out a lengthy, full-count walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth.
Ruhm's performance clearly inspired his teammates, with David, Stephen Lohr and Antonio Chavarria giving CBU its first lead, 3-2, with three-straight, run-scoring doubles.
"Ruhm had that great 10-pitch walk and that's really what started this whole thing," David said. "Coach said, 'A lot of people will remember the doubles, but it's really Brian that got it all going' – that was really big for us."
Mark Sanchez made it four-consecutive hits with an 0-2 single into center field that scored Chavarria from second to add an insurance run.
"Luckily, we were able to make an adjustment late in the game to put up that four spot and get the win," David said. "I just knew I had to put a good swing on it to get [Ruhm] into scoring position, I also knew with his speed even a double could score him. I was just ready to put a good swing on it."
Concordia made it interesting in the top of the ninth, putting two runners on with one out after a hit by pitch and single. A groundout to third induced by CBU reliever Vini Haro put both in scoring position with two outs before Coach Gary Adcock made a move to the bullpen for the lefty-lefty matchup with pitcher Brody Robinson.
Pressure mounted for Robinson with a 3-1 walk, but he centered himself and worked his way in front of the next batter, 1-2, before getting a game-ending grounder to shortstop to record his second save of the year.
"I didn't want to walk the leadoff guy, that was kind of bad," Robinson said. "I just wanted to be efficient, get the ground ball and get out of it after that.
"It feels good to get the call in that situation, I am happy with it."
Miller turned in a solid start on the mound for CBU, going 7.2 innings with nine hits, a walk, two runs and six strikeouts. Stephen Carajabal got the win, though, after he retired his one and only batter in the top of the eighth.
David – the reigning PacWest Player of the Week – went 2-for-4 with the RBI double Thursday. Tyler Johnson (2-for-3) joined him as the other Lancer with a multi-hit night. Ryan Williams, Chavarria, Sanchez, Lohr and Gallaway each had a hit, as well.
While the win may not have been perfect, it said something about the determination the Lancers possess this season.
"We'd like to have a nice, clean ninth inning," David said, "but it says a lot about a team that can get through a bases-loaded jam like that."
