Bettering His Case

SAN FRANCISCO — In his last meet before the NCAA Division II Championship Meet, California Baptist University's Anthony Lozano bettered his case for a spot in the event that's just two weeks away.
"Anthony ran well and really increased his chances of going to nationals," said head coach Ben Gall.
Lozano took sixth overall with a time of three minutes, 48.06 seconds in the 1500-meter race. Last week he had a big improvement on his personal best and while this time was only .79 seconds faster than that, it moved him up eight spots in the Division II rankings. The time currently sits as one of the top-20 times in the division, which should be enough to send Lozano through to his first NCAA championship meet.
Valentin Robert wasn't far behind Lozano, taking 10th overall with a time of 3:51.02. The junior, who was one of two Lancers to earn All-American status at last year's NCAA Division II Championship, picked up his third qualifying mark by shaving a full second off his previous personal record. Robert already has an automatic mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:16.83) and has another conditional mark in the 5K (14:16.39).
While some provisional marks were just seconds away from being met Saturday at the USF West Coast Last Chance Meet, the groundwork was laid for the years to come.
"We have a lot of young people knocking on the door so that's good to see," said Gall.
In just his second time ever running the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Dennis Messmer shaved over seven full seconds off his first race's time, clocking in at 9:18.29. It was just 1.29 seconds off the provisional qualifying mark (9:17.00).
Duncan Perillat just beat out his teammate by .30 seconds, but was a second off a personal record. The junior crossed the finish line in 9:17.91 for third place overall and will have to see if his provisional mark makes the cut for a trip to Florida.
The Lancers head to Bradenton, Fla., May 26-28 for the Division II Championship. Last year, CBU produced two All-Americans at the meet, including one podium placement, and will look to better that performance this year.
