BILLINGS, Mont. — Riding a three-game winning streak, California Baptist University looked to keep momentum in its favor, but dropped a 3-0 loss at Montana State-Billings Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers fall to 3-1-0 overall, while the Yellowjackets improve to 3-2 on the year with their third-straight shutout.
"Today was a day where what could go wrong, did go wrong," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "We were not mentally ready to play today. MSUB completely out-fought us and out-worked us."
Coming out of halftime even at 0-0, MSUB came out and capitalized on its chances. The Yellowjackets struck first in the 56th minute and made it 2-0 less than 10 minutes later.
The Lancers looked like they might be able to shake out of their funk, drawing a penalty kick in the 67th minute, but the attempt was just off target to keep CBU in the two-goal hole. Daniel Westholm had a chance in the 73rd minute with a shot on goal in the 18-yard box, but the MSUB goalkeeper made the save to keep his clean sheet.
Three minutes later, the Yellowjackets put the final dagger in with their third goal of the game.
Still, CBU fought to try to break the scoreless barrier, with Luca Tschaidse forcing the Yellowjacket keeper to make a save in the 77th minute. Unfortunately, time ran out with the 3-0 result.
The Lancers will look to bounce back on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. PT game against University of Mary, also in Billings, Mont.
"Now we have to learn from what happened and respond," said Michaelson. "We've had an off day but we have another game in two days, where we can put this behind us."
