BILLINGS, Mont. — California Baptist University bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 3-0 win over University of Mary Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 4-1-0 heading into PacWest action next week, while the Marauders drop to 4-3 overall.
"Today was all about responding to the result Thursday and also getting that fourth non-conference win," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "If there's one regret, it's that we really should have scored more, but the win is the main thing."
It was the Luca Tschaidse show Saturday as the junior striker put two quick goals into the back of the net and finished it off with another to complete the hat trick and lead his team to victory.
Just seven minutes into the contest, Tschaidse struck first. Sebastian Wiesboeck sent a cross into the box, connecting with Tschaidse's head for the first goal of the day.
CBU was hungry for more and forced the Marauder goalkeeper to make save after save to try to contain the Lancers.
Try as it might, UMary couldn't hold off Tschaidse and the Lancers and found itself in a 2-0 hole 20 minutes later. After grabbing the ball away from a Marauder, Tschaidse had time and fired off a long-range shot straight into the far post.
Despite the 2-0 lead at halftime, CBU knew it had a whole 45 minutes left on the clock and wasn't ready to take its foot off the pedal. Once again, Tschaidse put himself in scoring position and tucked away a pass from Aidan Apodaca in the 51st minute.
The Lancers still pressed for more in the remaining 39 minutes, but settled for the 3-0 win.
CBU opens PacWest play on Thursday, hosting Point Loma at 12:30 p.m. The Lancers then take on rival Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 27th, also with a kickoff time of 12:30 p.m. at Lancer Soccer Field.
"Now we close the door on our nonconference season and look forward to kicking off conference on Thursday against a tough Point Loma team," said Michaelson. "We are excited to get back home after a grueling road trip to Montana."
