COMPLETE RESULTS
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University has quickly established itself as the top team in the PacWest, but the Lancers want to turn that into a top team in the region. Friday night, the men put in a good case for themselves, dominating other teams in the region.
"We know we're the best team out of the group here and it showed," Coach Ben Gall said. "Both FPU and APU are probably the next best teams in the PacWest, besides Academy of Art, so it's great to see us finish significantly ahead of them."
The Lancers, who rank ninth in the region, finished with 20 team points — with 15 being a perfect score — beating out the second-place team by 35 points in the first 6K race of the year. Fresno Pacific took second with 55 points, while Azusa Pacific finished fourth with 97 team points.
"The first race of the season is always good to get the cobwebs out," said Gall. "It's also a confidence booster for the guys to see how well they did against some guys who had beaten them out at the regional race last year. Our guys are better prepared for this season."
CBU started the race slow, but broke open the competition in the last mile. Valentin Robert stayed with the front of the pack, but didn't take over the lead until late in the race.
Robert crossed the finish line first for the third year in a row, clocking in at 18 minutes, 59 seconds, coasting to his third invitational win.
"It was nice to race with the team after a summer without everyone," said Robert. "It was a little strange not leading at the beginning, but it was nice to see my teammates throughout the race. We try to motivate everyone and help each other."
In his first race as a Lancer, Michael Lowrie put in a solid performance and took second overall. The Division I transfer wasn't far off Robert, crossing the finish line with a time of 19:07.
CBU runners came pouring in after Lowrie to take spots four, sixth and seventh, giving the Lancers a good start in team points. Mirco Zenzen finished in 19:13 for fourth, while Ken Kipkorir — who stopped mid-race to fix his shoe — and William Ernst rounded out the top-five runners in sixth (19:19) and seventh (19:20), respectively.
The Lancers continue the season next week at future PacWest member Biola, racing at 8:00 a.m. in La Mirada, Calif.
"We have a long way to get to where we want to be, but today was a good showing," said Gall.
