Setting The Tone In Conference

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After being picked to finish sixth in the PacWest Preseason Poll, California Baptist University came out with something to prove Thursday afternoon. The Lancers proved they are not a team to take lightly and grabbed an impressive 3-0 victory over Point Loma – the team picked to take second in the PacWest.
"Point Loma is a very good team and one of the favorites in our conference so we are very happy with the result," said Coach Coe Michaelson.
The Lancers improve to 5-1-0 overall and start conference action 1-0. The Sea Lions drop to 1-2-3 on the year, 0-1-0 in the PacWest.
Point Loma was the first team to get a shot on goal, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.
"I thought Point Loma started really well, but from about 15 or 20 minutes on the game changed," said Michaelson. "We had three great chances from that point on in the first half but our final ball was just missing and we were disappointed not to score. In the second half, we did much better at converting our chances. And of course I'm proud of the effort throughout the team to get the shutout and really limit any good chances for a very good PLNU team."
The second half, on the other hand, was a different story as the Lancer offense came to life.
Just eight minutes into the second frame, Aidan Apodaca broke the scoreless barrier. Kyle Pizano put Apodaca in behind the Sea Lion defense and one-on-one with the PLNU goalkeeper. Apodaca took one touch past the Sea Lion and tucked it home to put CBU up 1-0.
Ten minutes later, Pizano grabbed his first goal of the season off a free kick from about 35 yards out that glanced off the crossbar and into the net.
CBU wasn't content with just a two-goal lead and added another for good measure in the 83rd minute. Apodaca and Luca Tschaidse teamed up for a wall pass that put Apodaca in perfect position for his sixth goal of the season and a 3-0 Lancer lead.
The Lancers get a little time to rest before taking on another tough opponent in rival Azusa Pacific on Tuesday. CBU and the Cougars kick off at 12:30 p.m.
