RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It was a big night in the Van Dyne Gym Saturday night. Not only did No. 5-ranked California Baptist University dominate Concordia University of Irvine 89-55, Michael Smith set a new all-time scoring record.
And there are still more games to be played.
The Lancers improve to 15-1 overall, 7-1 in the PacWest, and extend their unbeaten streak to seven-straight games. The Eagles drop to 9-7 on the year, 5-3 in conference.
Smith only needed 13 points to surpass Warren Daniels' record of 1,716 career points set back in 1992, and he nearly had that at halftime. The senior guard finished with 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting to put his career tally to 1,727 points.
"I'm really happy for him, he's a good kid," said Daniels of Smith. "It was never about records when I was playing, it was just about being here. I never thought of being a record holder so I'm happy for [Mike]. Hopefully he can hold it for just as long and some new kid can come along and he can pass the torch to him."
To up the ante, Jordan Heading scored a career-high 31 points on 10-for-15 shooting, including 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. Kalidou Diouf chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards as the Lancers out-rebounded the Eagles 44-to-34.
As a team, CBU was on fire, shooting 50-percent from the floor, including 52.6-percent from three-point range. The Eagles, on the other hand, weren't allowed a single three-pointer in the 40 minutes.
Concordia may have tied the game at 4-4 two minutes into the game, but it was all downhill from there as CBU went off on a tear.
Smith got the Lancers going on their first big run of the night, banking in a shot off a Marquise Mosley assist. He added another five points in the 13-0 run, while De'jon Davis, Mosley and Diouf also got in on the scoring action to put CBU up 21-6.
That 15-point lead quickly turned into a 25-point lead as Heading and Smith combined for three three-pointers in a span of 90 seconds – along with a layup from Diouf – to give the Lancers a 39-14 lead.
It forced Concordia to take its third timeout of the game, leaving just one left for the remaining 24 minutes of action.
The Eagles stopped the bleeding briefly, but CBU walked into the locker room with a 45-22 upper hand at the half.
CUI managed to cut the margin down to 19 points, 55-34, but the Lancers just kept coming.
Jason Todd knocked down a trey from the corner and followed up with a fastbreak layup off a Heading steal, before Smith finished two chances at the charity stripe to threaten a 30-point lead, 64-36.
The Eagles sliced it back down to 20 with just under 10 minutes to go, but Coach Rick Croy called a timeout and the Lancers got going again.
Heading swished in a trey to spark a 10-2 run to give CBU back its 28-point lead, 75-57. The 30-point lead was just around the corner, however, as Smith hit two more free throws to put his team in front 79-48 with 4:43 left to play.
CBU coasted from there and looked like it might even go up by 40 points as Danny King stole the ball away and was fouled on the fastbreak. He finished both his chances at the line to further distance the Lancers from the Eagles, 87-49.
CUI closed out the game on a 4-0 run to give CBU the 89-55 victory.
The Lancers turn right around to host Academy of Art on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
Coach Rick Croy and CBU President Dr. Ronald L. Ellis present Michael Smith with the game ball after he sets a new all-time scoring record.
