KEARNEY, Neb. – For the second week in a row, California Baptist University wrestled four duals in one day, this time taking to the Nebraska Kearney Duals on Saturday.
The 12th-ranked Lancers posted two quality wins Saturday against teams receiving votes in the NCAA Division II top-25 or better. They defeated Adams State and No. 21 Colorado State Pueblo before suffering a loss to fourth-ranked host Nebraska at Kearney and Chadron State. CBU nears .500 now in duals at 7-8 overall, while UNK improves to 12-4, CSC climbs to 5-0, CSUP moves up to 5-3 and Adams State drops to 1-2.
CBU takes a week off before heading to San Francisco State for a dual with the Gators on Jan. 27th and then the California Collegiate Open on the 28th. It serves as the last tune-up before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on Feb. 4th in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Three CBU wrestlers – Daxton Gordon, Nick Fiegener and Jacob Waste – won all four of their matches on Saturday, while Dominic Kincaid won three of his bouts. It helps ensure both Waste and Fiegener maintain their top-four individual rankings in NCAA Division II, with Waste No. 1 at 197 pounds and Fiegener fourth at 184.
CBU started the day with a 26-15 win over Chadron State, despite falling into a 12-0 hole three matches into the dual. Gordon stopped the bleeding with a 6-4 win over the Eagles' Sean Glasgow at 149 pounds. Slater Johnson followed that up with a 5-0 shutout of Chadron's John Porter at 157 for CBU, and Kincaid majored Reed Burgener, 13-4, at 165 to pull CBU within two, 12-10.
Consecutive technical falls recorded by Fiegener (18-0) and Waste (23-8) at 184 and 197, respectively, moved CBU closer to Chadron, but the Lancers just fell by one, 21-20.
Against Adams State, the Lancers were down again, 11-0, after two matches. It did not make a difference, though, as CBU won the final eight bouts to claim the 39-11 victory. Peter Cunningham (141), Johnson and Kincaid all posted pins, while Fiegener and Waste won by tech again.
CBU picked up wins from Gordon, Fiegener and Waste in the Nebraska-Kearney dual, but it was not enough in a 31-13 loss. Gordon edged Keith Surber, 5-3, while Fiegener majored Zach Stodden, 16-2. Waste secured his victory with a pin at the 1:13 mark.
In the final dual of the day versus CSUP, the Lancers got out to a quick start and led 10-3 four matches in after victories from Donovin Guerrero (14-12), Cunningham (11-1) and Gordon (5-3).
The Thunderwolves clawed back within 13-9, but consecutive technical falls from Fiegener (16-0) and Waste (20-5) secured the victory. Nevertheless, Paul Head put an exclamation mark on the win with a 2-0 win over Augustine DeSantis in the heavyweight match.
