RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off a solid first year with California Baptist University where his team finished with double the wins from the following year, Coe Michaelson is adding to his arsenal for 2017 with midfielder transfer Joey Chica.
"We are obviously thrilled to welcome Joey to CBU," said Michaelson. "He is one of the best attacking midfielders in the country and a potential pro."
Chica makes the move from Cal State Dominguez Hills where he was last year's California Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year and was named to both the D2CCA and NSCAA All-American. He led the CCAA with 12 goals and seven assists, tallying 31 points in 15 games with the Toros.
It was a solid encore performance after he picked up All-CCAA and All-West Region honors the year before. In his sophomore season, Chica started all 19 games he played in for the Toros, scoring five goals and adding four assists.
"When you look at our returning group and throw him in the mix, along with Abe [Placito] coming back from a medical red-shirt, that gives us five returning All-Region players and 10-plus seniors," said Michaelson. "With Division I looming in 2018, we wanted to add players for our final season of Division II that help us to achieve our goals, which are very ambitious. Adding a special dynamic attacker like Joey certainly equips us to do this, and it's particularly beneficial to have him here this spring, preparing as part of the group now, rather than joining up this fall."
Chica transferred to CBU before the start of the spring semester to continue taking classes during his junior year. He will be one of 10 seniors on the team in the fall, looking to add to the mix of the team that ranked 29th in scoring offense, 26th in assists per game and 20th in shots per game in the NCAA.
