SANTA CLARA, Calif. – From start to finish, no team led by more than one goal in California Baptist University's Julian Frasier Memorial Tournament opener with 19th-ranked Brown on Friday afternoon at Santa Clara.
There were a total of 10 ties in the game, with the Bears coming up with the final goal in the final two minutes for an 11-10 win. Gabe Thorne blocked 17 shots in the cage in the loss, which was one shy of his season and career high, for the Lancers, while Dominick Nevarez scored three times and assisted on three other goals.
CBU drops to 16-11 this year and Brown improves to 12-9. It was a rematch between the two sides and a better result for the Lancers after the Bears picked up a 9-6 win over CBU in the first week of the season.
Logan Mena and Jonny Lotero (four drawn ejections) both scored two goals from center, while Thomas Henline and Caleb Rogers both notched two assists.
Brown took a 1-0 lead about halfway through the first quarter, but goals from Kyle Johnson and Mena gave CBU a 2-1 lead at the end of the frame. Nevarez kept CBU ahead, 3-2, but then the Bears scored twice to jump back in front, 4-3, by halftime.
Lotero and Nevarez scored back-to-back to give CBU a 5-4 lead two minutes into the third quarter, while goals from Luke Schuler and Zach Lowery kept the Lancers in front before Brown knotted the score going into the fourth.
Mena's second goal and a third from Nevarez kept CBU in front in the fourth, while Lotero notched his final tally to make it 10-9 CBU with 3:44 to play. The Bears answered back 22 seconds later and then scored once more with 1:56 to play, which wound up being the game winner.
The Lancers will have two chances to score an upset in the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament on Saturday. CBU will face both 11th-ranked San Jose State and No. 16 Bucknell at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The San Jose State game will take place at West Valley College, with the Bison game being played back at Santa Clara University.
