RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In another dominant year in the PacWest, No. 6-ranked California Baptist University was rewarded for its successes when the PacWest Cross Country honors were released Wednesday.Â
Coaching his men to their historical seventh-straight PacWest title, Ben Gall was named the PacWest Coach of the Year honor, while McMarshall Hartzenburg picked up both the Runner and Freshman of the Year honors and Pierre-Louis Detourbe grabbed the Newcomer of the Year title.Â
Hartzenburg made his season debut at the San Francisco State Invitational, finishing the 6K race in second place with a time of 25 minutes, 01.6 seconds, followed by a third place finish, 24:57.1 at the Lewis Conference Crossover.
Two weeks later, Hartzenberg won the PacWest Championship individual title in 24:53.7, helping lead the Lancers to another team championship – with CBU never losing since it joined the PacWest in 2011. It was the first time a freshman had won the individual crown.Â
Detourbe has also had a successful season, taking fourth at the PacWest championship with a time of 25:19.8. He debuted at the San Francisco State Invitational with a top-10 finish, clocking in at 25:29.5.
Simon Bedard and Jayden Emerson joined Hartzenburg and Detourbe on the All-PacWest first team with respective fifth and sixth place finishes at the conference championship.Â
Dennis Messmer and Michael Lowrie both earned All-PacWest second team honors for the Lancers, with Messmer finishing in eighth-place in 25:43.6, while Lowrie was right on his heel in ninth in 25:44.8.
Jacob Boatman (26:12.5) and Mirco Zenzen (26:15.3) rounded out all-conference third-team honors for CBU, by taking 16th and 17th overall, respectively.
Up next for CBU is the NCAA Division II West Regional on Nov. 4 in Monmouth, Ore. The Lancers will be looking to secure a top-three team finish, as they would then qualify for the NCAA Division II Championship on Nov. 18. There are also eight at-large bids across all of the division that will be named heading into the final race of the year.
