Lancers Dig Deep

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — There may have been a last-second scare, but No. 9-ranked California Baptist University dug deep and held on for a 2-1 victory over Concordia University of Irvine Wednesday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 8-0-1 on the year and are now the only undefeated team in the PacWest, sitting in first place. The Eagles drop to 5-3-1 overall, 4-1-0 in conference.
"We weren't at our best today but I'm proud of the guys for showing some grit and determination to get the result," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "We had some guys step up big today as our depth was tested."
After a scoreless first half, CBU struck first in the 51st minute. Chris Heckenberg laid a ball over to Joey Chica, who rocketed off a left-footed shot from 20 yards out into the far post.
Less than 10 minutes later, however, CUI equalized, 1-1.
As time wound down, the game got more and more intense as the Lancers kept pushing for another go-ahead goal.
It came in the 82nd minute as Junior Guerra found Caley Powers on the right side of the field. Powers send a ball into the box, where Aidan Apodaca was there to tap it in, 2-1. It puts Apodaca's tally to an impressive 19 goals on the year, which leads all of NCAA (Divisions I-III) and sits as the single-season record at CBU.
With just two seconds on the clock, the Eagles were awarded a free kick just outside the center of the 18-yard box. CUI put a shot on goal, but Edgar Benitez made the save to preserve the 2-1 victory for his team.
The Lancers remain at home, taking on another tough opponent in Point Loma (currently third in the PacWest) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
"We are in the midst of a really challenging run of games and we have another tough one Saturday against Point Loma," said Michaelson. "We will get recovered and ready to go."
