STANFORD, Calif. — California Baptist University got its first taste of NCAA Division I competition Saturday afternoon with a tussle at Stanford. The third-ranked Lancers of Division II battled with the No. 21-ranked Division I Cardinal, but ultimately fell 20-15.
The Lancers drop to 2-1, while Stanford improves to 2-1, also beating Bakersfield on the day.
Andrew Schulte picked up a 14-6 major decision over the Cardinal's Jake Barry at 149 to stay undefeated in a Lancer singlet. He grabbed two takedowns in the first period to open with a 4-1 lead and carried momentum into the second. After choosing down, Schulte grabbed a quick escape and then took Barry down two more times in the second. He finished it off in the third with two escapes, a take down and one minute, 41 seconds of riding time to pick up the 14-6 win.
Christian Smith also remained undefeated at 165 with an 8-2 decision over Jared Hill. The fifth-ranked 165 pounder in D-II opened with a takedown that turned into a four-point nearful to hold a 6-1 lead after the first period. Hill scored a point in the second, but Smith answered with two points in the third – off an escape and riding time (1:01) – to win the bout, 8-2.
Nolan Kistler put up the biggest fight of the night, taking Keaton Subjeck to overtime in the 174 bout. Kistler, who tops Division II at 174, opened the matchup with two takedowns in the first, but Subjeck evened things up, 7-7, in the third to force an extra period. The Stanford grappler managed to scrap out the 10-9 tiebreaker decision, however.
Nick Fiegener, who also ranks No. 1 in his weight class, came out on fire and dominated his bout at 184. He opened with four takedowns and a four-point nearfall to hold a commanding 12-3 lead after the first. Fiegener carried that momentum into the second, grabbing another takedown and a two-point nearfall. There was no stopping him from there as he completed his sixth takedown in the third and finished with two and a half minutes of riding time to post the 20-6 major decision.
At heavyweight, Zach Schrader definitely threw his weight around in a dominant manner, posting a 17-7 major decision to improve to 3-0 on the year. He had eight takedowns in the victory, including four in the first period alone, and finished with 1:40 of riding time to take the bout 17-7.
CBU heads to the Embry-Riddle Open next weekend in Prescott, Ariz., where the grapplers will compete individually.
