LA JOLLA, Calif. – Seniors Jonny Lotero and Caleb Rogers stood out in their final college water polo game with California Baptist University in the Western Water Polo Association third-place game at UC San Diego.
Air Force pulled out the narrow 12-10 lead over the 17th-ranked Lancers, who end the regular season at 21-14 and the Falcons end the year at 9-14. Lotero scored twice, drew four exclusions and added a steal, while Rogers chipped in two assists in the game.
Lotero was voted to the WWPA All-Tournament First Team after he notched eight points (seven goals, one assist), drew eight exclusions and scored on 47 percent of his shots (7-15). Tanner Shore also earned WWPA All-Tournament Second Team distinction after he had nine points (five goals, four assists), had six steals and shot 45 percent (5-11) on the week.
Shore scored twice and assisted on two other goals versus Air Force, while Dominick Nevarez had three points (two assists, goal). Gabe Thorne also had 10 saves and two steals in the cage for CBU.
The Lancers jumped out to a 4-0 lead five minutes into the game after two goals from Lotero, one from Shore and another from Kyle Christian, with Rogers and Nevarez adding two assists each in that span.
Goals from Thomas Henline and Matt Diacono kept the Lancers up four, 6-2, with 3:07 left in the first half. The Falcons flipped a switch from there and scored the next eight goals to grab a 10-6 lead with 5:37 left.
The Lancers fought to get back in the game, with goals from Nevarez, Shore, Joseph Galgani and Ryan Sargis in the final five minutes, but Air Force answered when it needed to and held on for the two-goal win.
