Lancers Dominate Desert Duals

LAS VEGAS — No. 2-ranked California Baptist University breezed through the Desert Duals Monday, grabbing three dominating wins on the day.
The Lancers improve to 5-1 on the year, with their one loss coming to NCAA Division I Stanford. Individually, five grapplers went undefeated on the day: No. 11-ranked Andrew Schulte at 141, Slater Johnson at 157, No. 5-ranked Christian Smith at 165, No. 1-ranked Nolan Kistler at 174 and No. 1-ranked Nick Fiegener at 184.
CBU opened with a monstrous 52-0 victory over Central Florida, with five Lancers pinning their opponents, three more winning by major decision and the last two grabbing technical falls.
Alex Nunez started things off with a four-minute, 29-second pin at 125, followed by a 9-0 major decision at 133 from Mario Barrios. Schulte pinned his first opponent in 2:48 to keep things rolling for CBU. No. 4-ranked Daxton Gordon won his bout by major decision, 15-1, before Johnson and Smith had back-to-back falls, in 4:42 and 0:47, respectively.
Kistler kept momentum in favor of the Lancers with a 15-0 shutout technical fall, followed by a Fiegener pin at 2:26. Strang won his first bout by technical fall, 17-1, and Zach Schrader capped the dual with a 14-3 major decision.
The Lancers followed with a 30-12 victory over Coe College, despite going down 9-0 after the first two weight classes. Schulte sparked CBU with a 19-4 technical fall and Gordon put the Lancers in front with a pin in 5:28.
Johnson extended CBU's team lead with a 6-2 decision, followed by a Smith major decision, 11-2, at 165. Kistler majored his opponent, 12-1, at 174, before Fiegener dominated a 16-0 technical fall. The Lancers dropped the 197 bout, but rebounded with a 4-2 decision win from Schrader to take the dual 30-12.
In the final dual of the day, the Lancers defeated Menlo College 31-14. Like he did in his first bout, Nunez started things off with a pin, this time only taking 52 seconds.
Menlo took the 133 bout, but Schulte picked up a 17-8 major decision at 141. Johnson pinned his opponent at 157 in just 46 seconds, while Smith pinned his competitor at 165 in 1:51. Kistler and Fiegener finished the dual off with dominating wins as Kistler grabbed a 10-0 major decision and Fiegener had a technical fall, 20-3.
The Lancers head into the holiday break with some momentum, traveling to the NCWA National Duals after New Year's on January 4-5. CBU returns home to host San Francisco State on January 19 at 7:00 p.m.
