RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After three-straight games of rain spoiling the day, California Baptist University was finally able to get some games in and fully took advantage of the moment.
The Lancers grabbed a doubleheader sweep over No. 7-ranked Adelphi in two defensive showdowns, taking the first game 1-0 and following with a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory in the ninth inning.
With the wins, CBU improves to 6-5 on the season as it heads into conference play. The Panthers drop to 1-3 to start the year.
Ashley Coleman and Kellye Springstead each played huge roles in the Lancers' victories. Coleman pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out four batters in the process. Springstead threw nine innings, striking out 12 batters.
The first game came down to just one hit, when Hannah Thieroff blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth. The sophomore led the inning off with the home run, turning on a pitch and sending it over the fence at left, before CBU's defense held on for the 1-0 blanking.
In the nightcap, the Lancers got on the board first, once again in the fifth. With two outs, Deanna Alarcon singled through the left side to spark a rally. Krista Mann then stepped up to the plate and blasted a hit deep in the gap at right center. Alarcon didn't think twice as she rounded third to touch home, despite the Panthers catching Mann at third to end the inning.
Adelphi responded in the next half inning, with a solo home run of its own to even the game at 1-1.
CBU looked like it might end the game in the seventh, but the Panthers managed to get out of danger to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, with runners at first and second, Brittany Galvez made a clutch diving catch to end the inning and keep the game tied at 1-1.
Galvez would carry that momentum into her turn at the plate in the bottom of the ninth. After the Panthers grabbed two outs, Alley Johnson kept the inning going with a hard-hit single up the middle. Galvez followed with a double into the gap between the shortstop and second base to send Johnson home for the game-winning run.
The Lancers turn to PacWest action next, heading to Concordia University of Irvine on Saturday for a pair of games, beginning at noon.
