Opening PacWest With a Sweep

IRVINE, Calif. — California Baptist University got PacWest action going Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Concordia University of Irvine.
The Lancers took the first game in dramatic fashion, going into extra innings for the second game in a row, to pull out the 3-2 win. A powerful performance in game two gave CBU a 6-2 edge over Concordia for the sweep.
CBU improves to 8-5 on the season and starts 2-0 in conference, while Concordia drops to 8-7, 0-2 in the PacWest.
Krista Mann was a huge asset in game one, scoring two of the three runs with two solo homers. Cailtyn Lloyd grabbed the other Lancer run with yet another solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.
CUI got things started in the opener with an RBI single to get on the board first, but CBU responded with Mann's first homer of the night in the third inning.
Both sides stayed silent over the next three innings until Lloyd broke the standstill early in the sixth with one out and nobody on, turning on her pitch and sending it sailing over the fence for the home run.
The Eagles tied things back up in the bottom of the sixth. The game went to extra innings, before Mann hit her second homer of the night in the ninth to secure the first win of the day.
In game two, the Lancers broke through the Eagle defense to get on the board first in the sixth inning after Soraya Shahbazian singled through the gap in left field to bring in a run from Lloyd.
Amanda Springstead carried the momentum into the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field. Lloyd hit a double nearing foul ball territory in right field to earn two RBIs in the inning, followed by a Shahbazian single and a double by Brittany Galvez, making the score 6-0.
Concordia responded in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to start the at bat. A wild pitch allowed the Eagles to score once more, but CBU had maintained total control over the game, earning the second win of the day, 6-2.
The Lancers continue conference action Tuesday with two games at Azusa Pacific, beginning at 4 p.m.
