RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Kamille Diaz's record-breaking performance led to California Baptist University completing a monumental run in the PacWest Conference in a historic final game in the Van Dyne Gym.
It was no surprise then when Diaz was named the PacWest Player of the Week on Monday for her third weekly conference award of the year. The senior point guard erupted for a CBU single-game record 43 points in 42 minutes of a 94-85 home overtime victory over Point Loma Saturday.
It was the "last time in Van Dyne" – at least in the regular season – as CBU is scheduled to move into its new home, the Events Center next year after it's scheduled to open this May. The Lancers are ranked fourth in NCAA Division II and second in the West Region, which puts them in position to possibly host the West Regional.
Angela Romagnoli and Nicole Davis previously held the single-game points record for CBU at 42 each, which they set in 2003 and 2006, respectively. Diaz hit the mark on her Senior Night on 16-for-25 shooting from the field, 7-of-14 from three-point range and added four free throws. She added seven rebounds, five assists and a block.
Overall, Diaz put up 62 points on 66-percent shooting (24-36, 10-19 from three), 15 assists, 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in two games last week. The Indio, Calif., native logged 19 points, 10 assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block for her fourth double-double in a 124-75 road win at Concordia on Thursday.
Diaz finished the regular season by leading the PacWest in assists (6.0 apg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4), and ranked 13th in scoring (14.2 ppg). She will look to keep up her play in the postseason, as CBU looks to improve on its 26-game winning streak going into the PacWest Tournament. The Lancers open against the winner of Thursday's fourth and fifth-seed game between Notre Dame de Namur and Azusa Pacific, respectively, on Friday at 5 p.m. at Concordia University of Irvine.
