RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team got back on track on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Utah Tech Trailblazers 82-70 to further extend its lead atop the conference standings.
The Lancers improve to 11-2 in conference play and 17-9 overall, while the Trailblazers are 1-12 in the WAC and 6-17 overall. CBU still holds a one-game lead over Abilene Christian and a two-game lead over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, both of whom they will play again in the final stretch of the season.
CBU got off to a hot start, courtesy of Grace Schmidt, who made her presence felt in the first quarter of action. Schmidt would score all eight of her points in the opening ten minutes and would also have six rebounds, a steal, and an assist to help CBU out to an early 20-7 advantage. Utah Tech would make up some of the ground in the second quarter, pulling within 6 points with 6:49 remaining in the half. The Lancers would push the lead back over double figures with a quick five-point swing, but Utah Tech would hang around, only trailing 38-32 at the halftime break.
CBU would start the second half like they started the first, quickly scoring the opening seven points of the frame to force Utah Tech into an early timeout. The Trailblazers would regroup out of the timeout and get within five points at 5:55 to go in the third period, which would be the closest they would come for the rest of the afternoon. Just as Utah Tech got close, Emma Johansson would go on a quick 8-0 run by herself to end the third quarter and give CBU a 62-53.
CBU's offense finished the job in the fourth quarter, led by Shawnee Nordstrom, who would score all 11 of her points in the frame. Nordstrom would connect on all four of her field goal attempts and score two free throws to help CBU finalize the 82-70 victory. Two keys to the Lancers' victory would be their distinct advantage in turnover and perimeter battles. CBU would outscore the Trailblazers by 18 from the three-point line, connecting on 11 of their 34 attempts. In the turnover department, CBU would be a +7 over Utah Tech and would score 17 points off 17 Utah Tech turnovers.
Lauren Olsen would lead the scoring charge once again with 20 points on eight made field goals, while Johansson would score 19 points on a career-best five made threes. Filipa Barros would score all her points from the arc, netting five for a 15-point afternoon, and would collect a team-high nine rebounds and six assists.
NEXT: The Lancers will conclude its three-game homestand on Wednesday, February 18, against Utah Valley.
