CBU Outhits CSULA Again

LOS ANGELES – Offensively, California Baptist University kept outhitting its opponent in Saturday's series finale at Cal State Los Angeles.
A late rally flipped the script away from CBU's favor, as the Golden Eagles scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings for a come-from-behind, 7-4 victory. The Lancers open the year 0-3, while CSULA is 3-0 one week into 2017.
For the third game in a row, CBU out hit its opponent, 12-9, thanks to three-for-five outings from Tyler Johnson and Tommy Bell, along with a two-hit day from Ryan Williams.
Sophomore Justin Montgomery turned in a strong start on the mound for the Lancers. He allowed just three hits, three walks and one run, while striking out six over five innings. On offense, he was backed by a two-run first inning.
Williams started the game with a solo homer to left field in the first at-bat of the day. A Zack Norris walk and Johnson single set the table for Bell, who singled to shortstop to give CBU a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
After a Golden Eagle run in the fourth, CBU restored its two-run lead in the fifth. Johnson started the inning with a one-out single and a double from Bell put them both in scoring position. Bryce Macy brought Johnson home with a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Lancers up 3-1.
Cal State L.A. clawed back within 3-2 with a run in the sixth and then took a 7-3 lead with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning. CBU showed no quit in its final at-bats, with Bell coming up and hitting a solo home run to right field to cap the scoring.
The Lancers play a home-away-home, non-conference series with Cal State Dominguez Hills next week. The Toros visit first on Thursday at 6 p.m. and then host CBU Friday before the series finale is back at Totman Stadium Saturday at noon.
