BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of top-eight finishes added to California Baptist University's haul of All-Americans on the final day of the NCAA Division II Championships Saturday.
It also helped push the 16th-ranked Lancers past that projection to a 12th-place finish as a team in D-II. CBU went up against 32 other schools on the week and scored 129.5 points. In addition to two top-eight swims, the Lancers added an All-American honorable mention in relay competition.
"The guys went above and beyond what they were expected to finish, we came really close to the top-10," Coach Rick Rowland said.
Overall, the Lancers men and women combined for 25 All-American awards (21 individual and four relay) on the week.
Scott Tolman capped off a brilliant freshman season with an All-American finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. The true freshman took eighth in the event, with a time of one minute, 57.85 seconds.
"Scott was in good company, there were some older, international swimmers and he was the only freshman in the finals," Rowland said. "I know he is going to be a force for us moving on, he continues to drop time every time he goes out there."
Robert Griffith clinched an All-American award of his own with an eighth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle in 15:27.38.
"That was a big swim for Robert, that's two years in a row he's been up on the podium in that event," Rowland said.
Justin Quiroga, Brandon Schuster, David Ring and Alexis Ohmar earned All-American honorable mention by taking 11th in 2:59.46, which was an improvement on its prelim time of 3:00.00.
Tanner Shore took 22nd in the 1650 free (15:59.55). Bernardo Valentim and Alexis Ohmar finished back-to-back in the 100 free in 32nd and 33rd place, with respective times of 45.63 and 45.64.
