HILO, Hawaii — In its first of five doubleheaders out in Hawaii, California Baptist University set the tone early with 7-1 and 4-3 victories at Hawai'i Hilo Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers sit in first place in the PacWest with a 16-7 overall, 10-2 conference mark, and improve their win streak to eight-straight. The Vulcans drop to 8-12 on the year and 2-8 in conference.
CBU exploded out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the second of the opener off eight hits. The Lancers loaded up the bases early with one out, allowing Alley Johnson to drive in two runs with a double to center. Krista Mann then followed with a home run, making it 5-0 in favor of the Lancers.
Caitlyn Lloyd kept the hitting train rolling with a single to center, but UHH threatened to leave her stranded by grabbing the second out of the inning. Unfazed, London Miller turned on her pitch and sent it sailing over the fence to give CBU the seven-run cushion before the Vulcans could end the frame.
UHH managed to evade the run-rule victory, not allowing the Lancers to score the eighth run, and even scored in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout, 7-1.
Kellye Springstead threw six solid innings, striking out three Vulcans.
In the nightcap, the Vulcans struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first.
The Lancers responded in the top of the third, however, to take a 3-1 upper hand. Deanna Alarcon led the inning off by drawing ball four and was joined on base by Lloyd after a similar at-bat. Soraya Shahbazian then stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run homer to put her team in front.
CBU added some insurance in the top of the seventh after Shahbazian doubled aboard and then Miller traded places with her with another double, 4-1. Liz Dickson took over running for Miller and made her way to third, but the Lancers couldn't send her home.
Trailing by three, UHH hoped to put together a valiant comeback, opening the bottom half of the inning with two consecutive base hits. The Vulcans cut the margin to just two runs with an RBI single and put the tying run on base, with the game-winning run at the plate and only one out on the board.
UHH managed to plate another run to pull within one, 4-3, but Ashley Coleman wouldn't allow any more, sealing her victory with a strikeout. She finished with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
CBU heads back to Oahu where it will close out its 10-day trip. The Lancers take on Chaminade for their second doubleheader of the Hawaiian getaway on Monday, starting at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time.
