FRESNO, Calif. — After a valiant battle last week, No. 25-ranked California Baptist University was able to bounce back Friday in a 9-3 defeat against Fresno Pacific on the road.
Friday's matchup was the only the second conference game for CBU so far this season as the Lancers improve to 15-9 overall, and 1-1 in the Golden Coast Conference. The Sunbirds drop to 12-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
As usual, the offensive duo of senior driver Paizlee Dreyer and sophomore driver Lizette Perez sparked the Lancer offense. Both players netted three goals a piece for the Lancers while Annie Eubanks, Valerie Spezzaferri, and Abi Auer got in on the scoring action with one goal each.
Lina Medeiros continued to produce excellent work from the cage, notching nine saves and three steals while only allowing three goals.
CBU scored five of their goals in man-up situations, while defending FPU to a mere 2-for-11 in powerplay scenarios.
Dreyer started the scoring off just about halfway through the first period, capitalizing off a Medeiros long pass on a powerplay. The Sunbirds answered right back, but Perez netted a goal with less than a minute left in the period to keep CBU in front, 2-1.
FPU tied the score 2-2 in the second, but CBU responded with three-straight goals to jump out to a 5-2 lead at the break. Eubanks scored first, followed by back-to-back powerplay goals from Perez.
Dreyer kept the run going with a goal about two minutes into the third, 6-2, before FPU managed to find the back of the cage less than 40 seconds later, 7-3.
It was the last time CBU would let the Sunbirds in, however, as Dreyer, Spezzaferri and Auer sealed the 9-3 victory, each rattling off goals.
The Lancers remain on the road this weekend, where they will continue GCC play at the University of Pacific on Saturday at noon.
