RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Each year, California Baptist University's list of qualified athletes for the NCAA Division II Championship Meet has grown. This year, a total of seven Lancers will compete at the season finale in Bradenton, Fla., May 25-27, after the NCAA announced the field Tuesday afternoon. Six female runners and one male athlete will compete at the championship meet, with two veterans looking to lead the charge.
Valentin Robert is the lone male Lancer and makes his third consecutive trip to the national championship with a spot in the 3K steeplechase after posting a time of eight minutes, 57.21 seconds in the event this year. The senior – who holds the CBU record in the steeplechase – looks to add to his accolades after grabbing All-American finishes the past two years. Last year, Robert grabbed his highest finish with a fifth-place performance in the steeplechase.
Berenice Cleyet-Merle joins the Frenchman with an encore trip to Bradenton after competing in the 1500-meter event last year. She grabbed the highest finish by a Lancer, taking third in the event for her first All-American honor and will look to better herself this year. The junior has qualified for both the 1500m and 800-meter events, which she holds both CBU records in.
Making their Division II Championship Meet debuts are Katie Deimling, Emeline Delanis, Fruzsi Ladanyi, Kate Robinson and Anett Somogyi.
Deimling and Somogyi each qualified for the 3K steeplechase. Both have held the CBU record at some point this year, with Somogyi currently boasting the fastest Lancer time of 10:23.58. Ladanyi will join Cleyet-Merle in the 1500m race, while Delanis (5K) and Robinson (10K) take on longer distances at the event.
The championship meet will take place at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. The University of Tampa and IMG Academy will serve as co-hosts for the championships.
