EAGLE ROCK, Calif. — At the Occidental Last Chance Qualifier, California Baptist University saw three new school records set as the Lancers took advantage of one of the last chances to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championship at the end of this month.
Despite some of the team battling some illness, three Lancers really shone as they set new school records.
Berenice Cleyet-Merle won the 1500-meter event in a CBU record time of four minutes, 20.69 seconds, beating out a number of Division I athletes. She broke her previous record of 4:23.24 by shaving off almost three full seconds and now sits fourth nationally, securing her second-straight trip to the D-II championship meet.
Cleyet-Merle followed with another solid performance in the 800-meter, clocking in at 2:08.33 for 10th place. Fruzsi Ladanyi also ran both the 1500m and 800m races with Cleyet-Merle, taking 16th (4:31.73) and 41st (2:17.20), respectively.
Anett Somogyi took third overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:23.58. It broke her previous best time of 10:26.59. The time is just two seconds off an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark, but will get her a chance to run at the championship meet in Florida later this month.
Emeline Delanis broke her previous CBU record in the 5K by more than 20 seconds, crossing the finish line in 16:37.80 for 10th place overall. The time is good for an NCAA Division II provisional mark and ranks 12th in the division, which Coach Ben Gall is confident will get her a spot at the Division II Championship Meet.
Claire Rainey and Leanda du Bruyn followed Delanis in the 5K. Despite Rainey fighting off the sickness, she clocked in at 17:44.32. Du Bruyn wasn't far behind Rainey and finished with a time of 17:47.02, which ranks fifth all-time in the CBU history book.
On the men's side, Jonah Ross had a personal-best performance in the 5K, finishing the race in 15:12.44. Dennis Messmer and Duncan Perillat were neck and neck, clocking in at 9:21.22 and 9:21.92, respectively. William Ernst ran his second-fastest 1500m ever, finishing in at 3:54.06.
The Lancers have one more meet where they can try to better their chances of competing at the NCAA Division II Championship, heading to San Francisco next weekend for the USF West Coast Last Chance Meet. The D-II Championship Meet is May 25-27 in Bradenton, Fla.
